10 Reasons Why You Should Be Drinking Natural Wine

Natural wine is a term that was invented to differentiate wines that have been made without the use of additives or chemicals. What this means for you is that you can be confident you are drinking a healthier, cleaner, and purer wine. – There are a few different ways to make natural wine: organic, biodynamic, and sulphite free.

Introduction to Natural Wine

Natural wine is made by winemakers who choose to leave in its natural, unprocessed state. Leaving wine as natural as possible ensures that its full potential can be appreciated. The wines are fermented with wild yeasts, sometimes without adding any sulfur at all. As such, there is an element of risk in making natural wine – you never know exactly what you’re going to get because it is dependent on Mother Nature and seasons and climate and topography. They use organic or biodynamic grapes, or both, and they are grown naturally without herbicides or pesticides. Ask your wine merchant about it today.

1) Natural Wine is Better for You

Natural wine is better for you because it has natural sugars and high levels of antioxidants. The average sugar level for wines is 16 grams per serving, while natural wines have an average of 2.5 grams per serving. Antioxidants work to reduce or stop free radicals from forming and they are abundant in wines that have not been exposed to any heat treatment during production. The chemicals in pesticides can inhibit your immune system, so drinking natural wines will be less harmful to your body because they are pesticide-free!

2) Natural Wine doesn’t give you hangovers

Natural wine doesn’t often contain sulfites, which is what causes hangovers. Most people’s biggest complaint about wines are that they leave them feeling sick in their stomach or head aches from drinking it but those aren’t typically caused by alcohol, they’re just an unfortunate side effect of an allergic reaction to sulfur dioxide. It’s very difficult to be allergic to wine. On top of that, natural wines are usually made with all-natural ingredients so you won’t find chemicals and preservatives like some other wines have.

3) Suitable for sulphite allergic individuals

Many people suffer from sulphite allergies, whether they know it or not. For those individuals, they should be concerned about sulphites and sulphur dioxide in any form of wine. This includes white wines with added sulfites, as well as wines labeled ‘natural.’ If you are concerned about your sulphite level because of an allergy or sensitivity to foods containing these chemicals, you may want to consider avoiding natural wine.

4) Better for the environment

Soil is important to our survival. Agriculture uses up about 75% of all global land, and if we consider that more than 2/3rds of agriculture is under an irrigation system (which depletes aquifers), then soil preservation becomes even more crucial. One way to help conserve our soil is by eating more organically grown foods. Organic farming does not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides, both of which are known for their negative effects on soil quality.

5) Maintains traditional wine-making methods

Wine is created with traditional wine-making methods that would have been used for thousands of years – simply put, this is the way wine is supposed to be made.  Winemakers who produce natural wines use organic grapes and renewable energy sources when possible. The following are just some of what they strive to avoid: fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and preservatives.
