Whether it be the sweet aroma of freshly baked pastries or the long line stretching from the Culbert’s Bakery on West Street down to Goderich’s historic Main Street, you will know you have arrived. COVID-19 is not the sole reason for that.

Culbert’s Bakery, which has been in operation since 1942, is renowned for its powdery round cream-stuffed donuts, which draw locals and visitors from all over. While the bakery advertises its tasty cream puff, there are many kinds of donuts available.

The day-olds sit on the ‘reduced’ rack near the entrance, next to other options such as the honey dip and orange twists. However, there are significantly fewer lemon, jelly, cherry, and blueberry-stuffed donuts on the shelves. Cream puffs are on either side.

The cream puff display racks at the back of the bakery are refilled as soon as the freshly baked ones are pulled from the oven onsite. On days when donuts are in high demand, the bakery shelves are frequently bare, particularly in summer months. In fact, you’ll rarely come across the famed cream puffs on the bargain rack.

The original owner of the Huron County institution, Curry’s West Street Bakery, Mel Curry, turned it into Culbert’s Bakery in the 1900s. It was later changed to Culbert’s Bakery by Mel Culbert in 1942. Darin Culbert, grandson of the original bakery owner, continues to bake fresh goods on-site at this Huron County institution. Darin Culbert took over from his father, Barry Culbert.

There are gooey butter tarts, chocolates, and other mouth-watering treats on the high glass cake counter. For those who require fresh bread delivery or rolls, the bakery is the place to go. Even more tantalizing than the chocolate chips in the shortbread cookies are gooey butter tarts, chocolates, and other sweets that will stimulate the taste buds all day long.

It’s best to call ahead for cream puff orders at the bakery, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, or risk being disappointed. Donut racks are often empty mid-afternoon. The glass cabinet is always stocked with some treats, just not the ones you want. 49 West Street, Goderich. www.culbertsbakery.com
