What is the relationship between Food and Wood?

The 11 Best Sandwiches to Bring to Work

Wood can be related directly to an old-time or a rustic style. Serving food on wooden boards was started as a fad, with restaurants serving food on various kinds of surfaces. But the wooden board was here to stay. Though a lot of people frowned upon the idea, stating that it was unhygienic. But a famous research study at the University of California proved that bacteria from wooden surfaces could not be transferred onto the food. There are other advantages, too, of using wood to serve food. Some of them are:

  • Wood is an inductor of heat. So it keeps food warm for a long time.
  • Wood is a natural resource, so it is recyclable and does not pollute the environment.
  • Wood usually lasts longer than normal plates.
  • Also, it cannot be denied that wood remits a classic and rustic feeling.

Now, many would argue that not all kinds of food can be served on wooden boards. That is exactly where a grazing table comes in.

What is a grazing table?

A grazing table consists of a long wooden board that is carefully arranged, a selection of meats, cheese, seasonal fruits, and other decorative items placed on it, which are usually made in a way that they do not require cutlery to be eaten. They are made in the format of finger food. So that guests at a party do not have to sit down and stop the flow of the party just to enjoy good food.

It is a heaven for any foodie as it is a combination of both the sweet and the savoury. The entire table is arranged with savoury options of meat, cheese, etc. The sweet options can range from fruits to chocolates.

What is a Borrelplank?

A borrelplank is basically the Dutch version of a grazing table. The only difference is that Borrelplank usually has a selection of alcoholic drinks, which are not available with a grazing board. The Borrelplank combines the Dutch’s favourite two pastimes, which are snacking and drinking.

Both grazing board and borrelplank consist of various options of cheese. They are also accompanied by various cuts of meats. They are also both often arranged as finger food, which makes it easier to enjoy both types. Both of them also provide a wide range of bread to select from.

There isn’t much difference between them other than the way it is served. The borrelplank is much more relaxed and informal, rather than the formal and prim and proper way of serving in a grazing board. Also, the latter is arranged in a very dense way with many decorative items. But in the former, it is made in the way that it can be just enjoyed for eating.

Conclusion

So if you love food, then you couldn’t be bothered less about wood. I wouldn’t be at least!

If you love the rustic feeling of food and also love to just splurge on finger food, then both the Food and Wood and the borrelplank are your thing.
