Barbecuing The Best Pulled Pork

Preparing the best pulled pork requires some unique ingredients. A BBQ pulled pork is not complete without sauce and coleslaw. So alongside listing the ingredients needed for the preparation of the pulled pork recipe below, we will also be listing out ingredients needed for the perfect barbecue sauce and coleslaw!

Ingredients for the pulled pork preparation

  • Paprika (at most 3 tablespoons)
  • Garlic powder (at least 1 tablespoon)
  • Brown sugar (1 tablespoon)
  • Mustard (1 tablespoon)
  • Sea salt ( at most 3 tablespoons)
  • Shoulder/Boston butt pork depending your preference (at most 7 pounds).

Note: the pulled pork used can be more than 7 pounds but you’ll have to increase the measure of ingredients.

Ingredients for the barbecue sauce

  • Cider vinegar- could be different, depending on your preference
  • Yellow mustard (a cup at least)
  • Ketchup
  • Drippings from the pork preparation
  • Smashed garlic
  • Kosher salt (at least one teaspoon)
  • Hamburger
  • Ground pepper- black pepper preferably
  • Cayenne (at least one teaspoon)

Ingredients for the coleslaw

  • Green cabbage- shredded preferably
  • Grated carrots
  • Sliced red onions
  • Sliced chile
  • Mayonnaise
  • Lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • Celery seed
  • Hot sauce
  • Chopped green onions
  • Dijon mustard

Stepwise Procedure for preparation

  • Step 1

Combine the ground paprika, garlic powder, mustard, brown sugar, and sea salt. Mix them all up in a bowl.

  • Step 2

Get your raw pork and rub the entire surface with the blend you prepared in the first step. Place the pork with the blend in a refrigerator and leave it for at least 1 hour.

  • Step 3

Prepare the oven by heating it up to 300 degrees F.

  • Step 4

Place the pork in a pan and let it rest roast for a while- 6 hours at least. Basically, you need to roast till it falls apart.

  • Step 5

Prepare the barbecue sauce while the pork is roasting

  • Step 6

Combine the mustard, brown sugar, salt, garlic, black pepper, ketchup, and vinegar and mix them all up in a pan. Let the mixture heat up for at least 10 minutes. This is to make sure the sugar and pepper melt completely.

  • Step 7

After 10 minutes take the barbecue sauce off the heat and let it sit for a while.

  • Step 8

After 6 hours or more depending on how long it takes for the pork to fall apart, take it out of the oven and place it on a large dish. Allow the pork to sit for 8 minutes.

  • Step 9

While your pork is resting, deglaze the pan in the oven with water- about 4 cups. Try to scrape off browned bits from the pan. Pour your extract into the saucepan containing the barbecue sauce you prepared earlier and let the mixture cook for about 5 minutes.

  • Step 10

While your pork is still warm, grab two forks to make the pulling easier. Using 1 fork to hold the pork in place and using the other fork to pull the meat off the pork. After shredding, put the shredded pork in a small bowl and mix it up with the sauce. Stir up the mixture to ensure the pork and sauce blend well.

Finally, your barbecue pulled pork is ready. You can then serve with hamburger or coleslaw.

  • For the hamburger, spoon the barbecue pulled pork onto the bottom of the bun and top it up with coleslaw.
  • For the coleslaw, combine the sliced red/green onions, chile, grated carrot, and cabbage in a bowl. In another bowl, prepare a mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, lemon, and mustard mixture. Pour this mixture over the carrot-cabbage mixture and put the combined mixture in a refrigerator for about 120 minutes before serving.
